Keyboards

The keyboard is the vehicle by which the artist communicates with the instrument.  Two people can play the same notes in the same order with the same intervals yet they can sound completely different. the differences between a well played song and a virtuoso masterpiece are the subtle artistic nuances expressed by the artist.  A very slight difference in the force  used to strike a note  can change the mood of a piece.  For this reason the condition of the keyboard is vital to the performance of the piano.

Replacing the keytops corrects the appearance of the piano and improves function.  Cracked, broken, warped, peeling or missing key covers can catch on the fingers and on each other.  If you have been playing on a keyboard that needs work, once it is corrected, you will be amazed at the difference smooth, level and even keys under your fingers can make.

The weight of the key and the dip (depth that the key can be pressed down), the tightness, the speed that the key comes back up, the evenness of the spacing between keys, and movement of the keys from side to side seem to be small things but  when they are not right they cause frustration and can even make it impossible  to play a song correctly. All of these things can be corrected and create a significant difference in the performance of the piano.

Bushings are the felt pieces that line the notches in the keys where the keys touch the guidepins of the piano.  This felt becomes worn with age and/or swells with humidity causing keys to shift, stick or loosen. Replacing these felts can also dramatically improve the feel and function of the keys.

Key Benefits

Keyboard work improves basic functionality of the piano
A well functioning keyboard allows the artist to accurately and sensitively  communicate to and through the piano.
An aesthetically appealing keyboard  that has a smooth sensual feel is like a dinner that is well plated.  Just as the arrangement of the food on a plate on a beautifully set table can somehow taste better - players know that when it feels better it sounds better and when it sounds better it feels better..
